Sister Margaret Nightingale (Margaret Seton)

Nightingale-Margaret-go-295x300 Nightingale, Sister Margaret Elizabeth Rose (Margaret Seton) died suddenly at home on January 7, 2015, in Burlington, Ontario. Born April 10, 1940, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late George and Phoebe (Zwicker) Nightingale. Sister Margaret entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax in 1964 after having completed her BSc in Home Economics at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax and teaching for two years. Following her profession August 15, 1967, she interned as a dietician at the Halifax Infirmary and worked there in that capacity for a year. From 1970-1984, she was involved in pastoral ministry within the Archdiocese of Halifax and the former Yarmouth diocese in various capacities: regional and parochial director of catechetics, spiritual direction particularly in Dartmouth, Middleton and Mount Uniacke. During the summers of those earlier years, Sister Margaret worked on a Masters in Applied Theology (Religious Studies) at St. Mary’s University, Winona, Minnesota, graduating in 1976. After a sabbatical year, she moved to Burlington, ON in 1985 and taught at Assumption and Notre Dame High Schools. On retiring, she studied to become a Licensed Holistic Practitioner, an occupation she continued despite failing health. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Florence Brown. She is mourned by the sisters in her Congregation, her niece Sheila Jenny, nephews Paul and David and their families and her brother-in-law, Bob Brown. Visitation will take place at Smiths Funeral Home, Guelph Line, 3-5 and 7-9 on Sunday January 11 and a Funeral Mass at 1 pm. at Saint Patrick’s Church, Burlington on Monday January 12.
A wake will be held at Caritas Residence, 215 Seton Road, Halifax, NS on Sunday, January 18 starting at 6 pm with prayers at 7 pm. followed by a reception.There will be a Memorial Mass at Caritas on Monday January 19 at 10 a.m. followed by burial of the ashes at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS.
