Ashe, Sister Clare (Wilfred Mary), 85, died in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, VG site, Halifax, NS on January 15, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS, on September 21, 1930, she was a daughter of William and Margaret (MacAvoy) Ashe. Sister Clare entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1951 and made her final vows on August 15, 1960. Sister Clare received a BSc in Elementary Education in 1966 and a BA in 1968; both degrees were from Mount Saint Vincent University. She began her ministry as an educator in Sillery, QC in 1954 and taught there until 1960. She continued in this same ministry in Bellmore, NY; Vancouver, BC; Jasper, Alta; Edmonton, Alta; and Mississauga, Ont. All of these years of ministry brought her to 1983. In that year, she was granted a sabbatical at the Galilee Community in Arnprior, Ont. From 1984 to 1989, she continued her teaching in Mississauga, Ont. In 1989, she was transferred to Hamilton, Bermuda where she taught until 1995. In that year, she returned to the Halifax Province where she served as the Treasurer of the Vice-Province and later as the Branch Office Treasurer from 1996 until 2001. From 2001 to 2008, Sister Clare volunteered in various capacities. She retired in December, 2008, and moved to Caritas Residence. Sister Clare is survived by her sisters, Catherine O’Malley (Ottawa), and Pauline Fry (Halifax); by her brother, James (Ottawa); along with many devoted and loving nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews numbering 100. Sister was pre-deceased by her sister Helen MacDonald, and by her brothers Robert and Gerald. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, January 20, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
