Hayes, Sister Elizabeth (Regina Marie), 87, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS, on March 21, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS on January 11, 1929, she was a daughter of Leonard and Rita (Bates) Hayes. Sister Elizabeth entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on September 8, 1947 and made her final vows on August 15, 1956. She received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent College, Halifax, NS, a MS from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana and a Master of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, NS. Sister Elizabeth began her ministry in education as a teacher at St. Agnes School, Halifax, in 1950. In 1959 she was transferred to St. Patrick High School, Halifax, where she remained until 1964. In that year, she moved to Vancouver, BC, where she taught in Notre Dame High School until 1970. From 1970 to 1971, she served on the provincial staff for apostolic research in our Western Province. She then taught high school for a year in Kelowna, BC. In 1972, she was elected by the Twelfth General Chapter to serve as Canadian Assistant for a period of four years. In 1976, she was elected by the Thirteenth General Chapter to serve as Second Assistant on the General Council. From 1980 to 1982, Sister Elizabeth served in parish ministry in St. John Vianney Parish, Lower Sackville, NS. At the end of that ministry, she was elected to serve as Provincial Superior of the Western Province. While serving in this office, she became President of the CRC-W from 1988 to 1990. Sister Elizabeth became a student at St. Paul’s in Ottawa where she received a Bachelor of Canon Law and then went on to serve as a Marriage Tribunal Judge in the Diocese of Nelson, BC from 1993 until 1994. She was transferred to Cape Breton where she served as a Marriage Tribunal Judge for the Diocese of Antigonish for two years and then served in a similar capacity for the Diocese of Halifax from 1996 until her retirement in 2005. Sister Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Marie Whelan (St. John’s, NL); by her brother, Archbishop Emeritus James Hayes, D.D., Halifax; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Rev. John Hayes. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, March 28 with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 29, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
