Sister David Marie Campbell

Sister David Marie Campbell

Campbell, Sister David Marie, 93, died at Parkstone Enhanced Care on May 29, 2013.  Born in New Waterford, NS on July 1, 1919 she was a daughter of Allan and Sadie (McNeil) Campbell.  She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1942 and made her final profession on August 15, 1951.  In 1941, a year before she entered the convent, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from New Waterford Hospital.  In later years, 1952-1953, Sister David Marie took a Post Graduate course in Operating Room Procedures.  From 1945 until 1960, she nursed in Hamilton Memorial Hospital, No. Sydney, NS; Swan River Hospital, Swan River, Manitoba; Immaculata Hospital, Westlock, Alberta; Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, NS.  In 1960, she was assigned to St. Elizabeth Hospital, No. Sydney where she did supervisory work for two years.  Then, because of illness, she was assigned to switchboard duty where she served for fifteen years.  After her retirement in 1975, Sister worked in the Business Office at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in Halifax.  A fractured hip sent her to Mother Berchmans Residence, the health care facility within the Motherhouse where she remained until being transferred to Parkstone Enhanced Care in 2002.  Sister David Marie is survived by her brother David (Hughena) Campbell (Bridgewater) and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sisters Clare Onyschuk and Marie Sabesberger.  The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 30.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence.  Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

Quinn, Sister Marion (Patricia Carmel), 90, died at the QEII – Infirmary site on October 8, 2013.  Born in Charlottetown, PEI on November 16, 1922, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Kiggins) Quinn.  She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1947 and made her final profession on August 15, 1956.  Sister Marion received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University as well as a B.Ed.  She later earned an MA in Education from St. Francis Xavier University.  She began her teaching ministry at St. Theresa’s in Halifax and then went on to teach in Sillery, QC.  She then returned to Halifax, NS where she spent the rest of her teaching days at several schools throughout the city including Oxford School where she taught from 1967 to her retirement in 1986 after serving in education for 36 years.  After her retirement, she worked in the finance offices at the Motherhouse in computer services and as an accounting clerk.  Sister Marion also served as Provincial Secretary for the Sisters of Charity  from 1969 to 1972.  In 2008, Sister Marion moved to Caritas Residence where she resided until her death.  Sister Marion is survived by her nephews James (Cindy) Quinn, Mississauga, ON; Michael Quinn, Mansfield, MA; Brian Quinn, Dorval QC; and John Quinn, Omaha, NE; by her niece Peggy Ann Turner, Maple Ridge, BC; and by her sister-in-law, Theresa Quinn, Verdun, QC.  She was predeceased by her brothers St. Clair and James Earl Quinn.  The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 10.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 11 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence.  Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

Sister Theresa Salter (Marie Thomas)

Salter, Sister Theresa (Marie Thomas), 86, died at Caritas Residence in Halifax, on October 13, 2013. Born in Bathurst, NB she was the only child of Thomas and Blanche (Gagnon) Salter. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 15, 1944 and made her final profession on August 15, 1953.

Sister Theresa received a B.Sc.El.Ed. and a B.A. from MSVU and later received a B.Ed. From the University of New Brunswick. She began her teaching ministry in Glace Bay, NS from 1947 to 1963 then was missioned to Yarmouth from 1963 to 1965. She then moved to Dartmouth where she taught from 1965 to 1970.

That year, Sister Theresa was sent to her home area, Bathurst, and ministered there from 1970 to 1981. In 1981-1982 she spent a sabbatical year at the Galilee Institute of Renewal in Arnprior, ON. In 1982 she became a staff member of the Renewal Center at the Motherhouse and then engaged in prayer ministry, spiritual direction and retreats at the Seton House of Prayer in Summerland, BC until 1985. At the end of that year, she became the coordinator of the Mother Berchmans Residence at the Motherhouse in Halifax where she continued to reside and minister to the needs of the sisters. In 2008, Sister Theresa moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax where she remained until her death. In her later years, Sister Theresa worked in the Sisters of Charity Archives doing research and formulating various bits of information into easy-to-read materials until her illness made it impossible for her to continue. Sister Theresa is survived by several devoted cousins. The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

Locally, St. Patrick’s, Roxbury as well as in West Roxbury, Dorchester and Quincy. Beloved daughter of the late Francis P. & Lillian (Beck) Riley. Sister of Francis X. Riley of Milton, Arthur Riley of Charlestown and the late Donald Riley. Sister in Law of Margory Riley. Aunt of Frank Riley, jr., Kathleen Lombardi, Terrance Riley, John Riley, Patricia Rose, Jean Ahern, Richard Riley, Robert Riley and Joanne Prendergast. Sister Claire Murphy (Clare Therese)

Murphy, Sister Claire, 95, died in Caritas Residence in Halifax on October 22, 2013. Born in Halifax, NS on August 12, 1918, she was a daughter of Edward and Leonie (Connors) Murphy. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on February 2, 1939 and made her final profession on August 15, 1947. Sister Claire received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University; an MA from St. Michael University in Winooski, VT; as well as a T.C.6 to qualify as a Guidance Specialist. She began her ministry in education at St. Peter’s in Dartmouth where she taught from 1941 to 1948. She was then missioned to British Columbia where she taught for eight years. Returning to Nova Scotia in 1956, she taught at Our Lady of Lourdes, Lourdes; St. Joseph’s in Halifax; Hants East Rural High School in Enfield; and St. Catherine’s in Micmac, NS. These assignments lasted until 1982, Once again, she travelled to British Columbia and from 1982 to 1990, she did pastoral ministries and religious education teaching in Cassiar, Erickson Gold Mine and Good Hope Lake. She also did home visiting in these areas. In 1990, she began her ministry in Shubenacadie, NS doing parish work, religious education and volunteer work at St. Catherine Parish in Indian Brook.

She also played the organ in the parish church. This work continued until 2013, when illness overtook her and she was transferred to Caritas Residence for health care. Sister Claire is survived by her sister, Mary White, Halifax, NS and by her nephews Greg (Hazel) Murphy, David (Sue) White, Kevin (Sally) Murphy, Tim (Doris) White, Christopher (Joanne) White and Steven Murphy. She was predeceased by her sisters Madeline, Mildred and Ruth as well as her brother, Cyril.

The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 27. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 28 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

 

 

Sister Frances Timmons (Muriel Patrick)

 Timmons, Sister Frances (Muriel Patrick), 79, died in Mount Lane at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS. on October 27, 2013. Born in Sherbrooke, QC on July 6, 1934 , she was a daughter of John and Muriel (O’Connor) Timmons. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 30, 1953 and made her final profession on August 15, 1962. Sister Frances received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1965, as well as a M.A.T. in Religion and a Quebec “A” Diploma. She began her ministry in education in Massachusetts where she taught from 1956 to 1963. A change brought her to Halifax, NS in 1963 where she remained until 1965. In that year, Sister Frances was missioned to St. Foy, QC and taught there until 1980. From that year until 1982 she taught in Kelowna, BC. In 1982 she was transferred to Elizabeth Seton Centre in Quebec City where she stayed until 1986. From 1986 until 1990 she taught at St. Patrick’s High School in Quebec City. Sister Frances enjoyed a sabbatical year in the IFM Program at Regis College in Toronto during the 1990-1991 year. Her ministry focus changed in 1992 when she became a pastoral worker at Covenant House in Toronto where she continued to work until her retirement in 2007. In that year, she returned to Halifax and resided at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse. When a move from the Motherhouse was planned, she was among those who went to Caritas Residence. After a few years, illness made it necessary for her to be transferred to Parkstone Enhanced Care where she remained until her death. Sister Frances is survived by her sisters Terri (Gerry) MacDonald, Helen (Douglas) Flaig, Maureen and Charlie Scroope; and by her brothers Patrick (Hermance) Timmons, Brendan (Philomena) Timmons, Michael (Ginette) Timmons, Dennis (Gloria) Timmons, and William (Eva) Timmons. She was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. Her body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 31 followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. in the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 1 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

Sister Marguerite Keenan (James Bernard)

Keenan, Sister Marguerite (James Bernard), 95, died in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS on January 15, 2014. Born in Saint John, NB on February 10, 1918, she was a daughter of the late James Bernard and Eva Marie (Vermette) Keenan. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on February 2, 1938 and made her final profession on August 15, 1946. When Sister Marguerite entered the congregation she already had attained a BA, then went on to earn a BLS from Mount Saint Vincent and later a MLS from the University of Toronto. In 1989, she earned a MTS from the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, NS. From 1940 to 1943, she worked as a Library Assistant at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse. For the next 23 years, Sister Marguerite was engaged in teaching/library work in Riverton, NJ; Patchogue, NY; St. Mary’s, Halifax; Mount Saint Vincent College, Halifax; and St. Joseph’s, Halifax. In 1966, she became the librarian at St. Patrick High School in Halifax and remained there until her retirement in 1979. Sister Marguerite then began her ministry in parish work and as auditor for the marriage tribunal. In 1983, she became the Religious Education Coordinator at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Windsor Junction, where she remained until 1996. In that year, she began her residence in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse and served as the Museum Curator for a short time. Sister was transferred to Mount Lane in Parkstone Enhanced Care in January, 2009. Sister Marguerite is survived by her nephew Kenneth (Maureen) Morriscey and James (Elaine) Morriscey; her nieces Christina Lavoie, Michele Walsh, Margo (Paul) Shoulderice, Paula (Bill) Smith and Maureen (Tom) Doane; and by several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Yvette Morriscey. The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Monday, January 19. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 20, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. A Sister of Charity (Halifax) for 68 years who was missioned in New York, locally in Lowell, Dorchester, North Andover and Wellesley. Beloved daughter of the late John & Julia (Danahy) McMahon Sister of the late Claire McCarthy and John McMahon. Sister in Law of Diana McMahon of Lawrence. DEVISON, Sister Yvonne Marie (Rose Peter), 76, died at the QEII Infirmary Site, Halifax, NS on February 3, 2014. She was born in Glace Bay, NS, on June 12, 1937, daughter of Peter Hibbert and Ethel Rose (Bourgeois) Devison. She entered the Sisters of Charity October 1, 1955 and made final profession on August 15, 1964. Sister Yvonne obtained her B.SC. in Elementary Education and a B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University, then later a B.Ed. from Bathurst College. Sister Yvonne taught for close to 35 years in Dorchester, MA; West Chezzetcook and New Waterford, NS; 27 of those years were spent in Bathurst, NB. After her retirement from the classroom, she trained to be a Registered Polarity Practitioner. Her clients appreciated her gentle touch. Sister Yvonne enjoyed life immensely, and a particular source of enjoyment were her summer days at the cottage where she could swim to her heart’s content. Sister Yvonne is survived by her sisters Ann Marie Lynk, Paula Stull, Theresa Jackman, and Dolores LeBlanc; by her brothers Charles and Vincent, and by many nieces, nephews and their families. She was pre-deceased by her parents Ethel and Peter and her sister Joan. The body will be at Caritas Residence with visitation from 3-7 p.m. followed by prayers at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, February 5. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 6, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel of Caritas Residence. Forbes, Sister Christene (John Cantius), 95, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 16, 2014. Born in Marydale, Antigonish County, NS, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine (Chisholm) Forbes. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1947 and made her final vows on August 15, 1956. Sister Christene held a Nova Scotia and an Alberta Teacher’s License. She earned a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1965. From 1950 until her retirement in 1980, Sister Christene taught in N. Dartmouth, NS;Edmonton, Alberta; Vancouver, BC; New Waterford, Reserve and Port Hawkesbury, NS. In 1980, she began her work in Parish Ministry and continued this experience until 1991. From 1991 until 1993 she engaged in hospital visiting. When she retired again in 1993, she volunteered as a pastoral worker. In 2008, she moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax where she remained until her death. Sister Christene is survived by her sisters Jean Warten, Fairfield, CT; and Cecelia Vallis, London, ON; by her brother Bill (Dorothy), Grimsby, ON; and by many nieces and nephews. Sister was predeceased by her sisters Jennie Forbes, Isabel MacIsaac, Margaret MacCallum, Mary Connors, Florence Banner and Barbara Brown; her brothers Duncan, Allister and Val. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, February 19, with visitation from 3 pm until the prayer service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 20 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Rose McNeil (Joseph Cecilia)

McNeil, Sister Rose (Joseph Cecilia), 71, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on March 11, 2014. Born in Halifax, NS, on January 9, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and of Marie (Boudreau) McNeil. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1960 and made her final profession on August 15, 1968. Sister Rose received a BSc.El.Ed. (cum laude), and a B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University. Later she received a M.A. in Social Work from Carleton University, Ottawa, ON. In 1965 her ministry began with teaching for a year and then becoming a student of social work. In 1971 she began her actual social work at the Home of the Guardian Angel and remained in this position until 1984. She then went on to do work in Family Service in Sydney and Glace Bay until 1987. That year, Sister Rose became the Provincial Superior of the Antigonish Province, a position she held until 1996. In that year, she became a Clinical Therapist with a private practice and in the following year she expanded her work to include International Adoptions. This work lasted until 2011. She was also a Home Care Co-ordinator from 2003 until illness prevented her from continuing this work in 2013. In September of 2013, she moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax where she received the health care that she needed. Sister Rose is survived by her mother, Marie; her sisters – Debbie (Roy) Stewart, Paula (Barry) Fairway, Sandra (Tony) Keith; her brothers – Mike (Michelle), Gerald (Lou), Bill (Joan), John (Fern), Danny (Nancy), Philip (Paula), David and Tony; her sister-in-law, Bev McNeil. She has many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Joe. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Thursday, March 13 with visitation from 2 – 4 pm and 6:30 – 8:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Benedict’s Church in Halifax followed by a reception in the hall. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer Society, the Sisters of Charity or a charity of your choice.

Sister Catherine Crimmins, SC Of Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills on April 20, 2014. A Sister of Charity (Halifax) for 73 years who was missioned in Rego Park and Patchogue, New York, Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bermuda, locally in Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley, St. Patrick, Roxbury, St. Kevin, Dorchester as well as in Dennis and Quincy. Beloved daughter of the late William & Nora (McCarthy) Crimmins. Sister of William Crimmins and the late Mary DeRosa, Helen Pistorio, Theresa Crimmins, Sister Helen Gerard, SC, Fr. Francis X. Crimmins, SMM, Brother Urban, CFX and Joseph Crimmins. Also survived by her many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours at Mt. St. Vincent, 125 Oakland St. WELLESLEY HILLS on Friday April 25 from 9:00 – 9:45 am, prayer service from 9:45 – 10:15 am, followed by a Funeral Mass in Mt. St. Vincent Chapel at 10:30 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sisters of Charity, Mt. Ellsworth, Sister Margaret (Agnes Margaret), 92, died in the Infirmary site of the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, NS on April 26, 2014. Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of Walter and Euphrasia (MacIntyre) Ellsworth. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 17, 1939 and made her final vows on August 15, 1948. In 1960, Sister Margaret received a B.A. from MSVU and a B.Ed in 1962. She also earned a Special Education (Auxiliary) Certificate. From 1942 until 1978 she was an elementary school teacher in several areas, including: Glace Bay, NS; Rego Park, NY; Lowell, Mass.; Havre Boucher, NS; Halifax, NS; Eastern Passage, NS; Richmond Hill, NY; Shubenacadie, NS; and Terence Bay, NS. In 1978, she volunteered her services in Religious Education until her retirement in 1993. Sister Margaret spent her retirement years in St. Stephen Parish until April, 2014 when she moved to Caritas Residence. Sister Margaret is survived by her sisters Kay Boudreau, New Waterford and Agnes Green, Carlisle, ON; by her brother Joseph, New Waterford; by her nephews Andrew Boudreau and Paul (Wendy) Boudreau, Douglas (Jane) Green, Darcy (Linda) Green, Danny (Sue) Green, Darrell (Kerry) Green; and by her nieces Paulette and Mary Beth Boudreau, Denise Green and Danielle (Mark) McLure. She was predeceased by her brother, William, and her sister, Mary Sutherland. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Tuesday, April 29, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 30 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.

Beloved daughter of the late Thomas & Mary J. (Connelly) McDonald. Sister of the late Mary Logue and Clare Dowling. Aunt of Virginia Berglund as well as several other nieces and nephews.
