Sister Mary Doris Montague

Montague-Doris-go-295x300Montague, Sister Mary Doris, 98, died in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS, on September 24, 2014. Born in Halifax, NS on October 25, 1915, she was a daughter of William and Ethel (Bartlow) Montague. Sister Mary Doris entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 15, 1932 and made her final vows on August 15, 1941. Sister Mary Doris received a BA and a MEd from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and a MA from Boston College. She also earned a Certificate in Guidance in 1968. Sister began her career as an educator in New Waterford from 1935 to 1944. She then moved to Glace Bay where she continued teaching from 1944 to 1949. Her next mission brought her to Yarmouth where she served as principal and teacher from 1949 to 1958. In 1958 she returned to Glace Bay where she was principal, teacher and local superior until 1962. She taught at St. Patrick High School in Halifax from 1962 until 1968. From 1968 until 1970 she taught at MacDonald High School in Edmonton, AB. Sister Mary Doris returned to Halifax in 1970 and served as a Guidance Counselor in St. Patrick High School until her retirement in 1980. She enjoyed a Sabbatical year at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington from 1980 to 1981. At the end of that year she was appointed as the Director of Hospitality at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, a position she held for several years. Sister Mary Doris also spent many years serving as a volunteer in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home tending to the spiritual needs of the persons living there. In 2006, Sister Mary Doris moved to MSV Motherhouse where she remained until the official move to Caritas Residence in 2008. In early 2014, she moved to Parkstone Enhanced Care where she remained until her death. Sister Mary Doris is survived by her nieces Kathi (Don) King, Halifax and Doris Garagan, Halifax; her nephews Pat (Joan) Garagan and Terry (Joanne) Montague. She was predeceased by her sisters, Parker Garagan, and Beryl Isnor; by her brother Roy; and by her niece Ann Sangster. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, September 29, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 30 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
