Gill, Sister Anne (Catherine Peter), 91, died in the Halifax Infirmary site of the QEII Health and Science Centre on October 26, 2014. Born in Roxbury, Mass. on December 24, 1922, she was a daughter of Peter and Catherine (Mayock) Gill. Sister Ann entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 15, 1940 and made her final vows on August 15, 1949. She received her R.N. & Nursing Diploma in 1946 from the Halifax Infirmary; a B.Sc. in Nursing from Catholic University of America in 1952; and a MS in Nursing Service Administration from Boston University in 1969. She began her nursing career at St. Anne Hospital in Hardisty, AB and served there from 1946 to 1949. She then was assigned to Seton Hospital in Jasper, AB for a year. In 1950, she became the Head Nurse in Hamilton Hospital in North Sydney, NS, a position she held until 1957. Sister Anne then served another two years as Head Nurse in Seton Hospital in Jasper, AB. In 1959, she returned to the Halifax Infirmary where she served in such capacities as Assistant Director of Nurses and Director of Nursing Services until 1972. In that year, she became the Vice-Provincial at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse and then held the same position at Mount Saint Vincent, Wellesley, Mass. until 1975. Her next mission was St. Vincent Guest House, as it was known then, where she served as Director of Nursing Services from 1976 until her retirement in 1988. After enjoying a well-deserved sabbatical year in 1989, Sister Anne then offered her services in the Renewal Centre in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, where she was engaged in hospitality and office activities until 1994. Volunteer work, such as distributing medical supplies for MBC, was to keep her busy until 2004. When the Motherhouse was closed in 2008, Sister Anne moved to Caritas Residence. Sister Anne Gill is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Dumas; and her brothers, Robert, Peter, Patrick and John. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Tuesday, October 28, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 29 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
