Harvey, Sister Margaret (Thomas Maria), 90, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 11, 2016. Born in Grand Falls, NL on February 25, 1925, she was a daughter of Thomas and Anne (Blackmore) Harvey. Sister Margaret entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on September 8, 1945 and made her final vows on August 15, 1954. Prior to her entrance, she received a BSc in Secretarial Studies and did four summers of stenographic work. Sister Margaret received her BA in 1954 and then went on to receive a MA in Philosophy from St. Louis University in 1964. She also earned accreditation as Animator of PRH (Personality & Human Relations) Sessions after attending training sessions from 1978 to 1980 in Winnipeg, Man. She actually began her ministry as an educator in 1948 and continued through 1961. She then went on to become a Professor of Philosophy at Mount Saint Vincent College from 1964 until 1966. From 1966 until 1969 she served at Mistress of Postulants at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse. In 1969, she became secretary to the Mothers General of the Sisters of Charity – Halifax until 1975. While living at St. Ignatius Convent in Bedford, NS, she held Animating Sessions in PRH from 1976 to 1980. She was elected Secretary General of the Congregation in 1980 and served in that capacity until 1984. She returned to the work of PRH in 1984 and combining that with some Retreat work, she continued these ministries until the late 1990’s. She retired to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in 2006. When the Motherhouse was closed in 2008, she moved with the other Sisters to Caritas Residence. She is survived by her sister Hilary (Joseph) Pacheco, (Bermuda); by her brothers Neil (Lois) and Leo (Madeline); also by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Vera Harvey, Zita Byrd and Eileen Smith; by her brother Kevin. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, February 15, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 16 at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
