Thibodeau, Sister Mary Josephine, 91, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 13, 2016. Born in Bathurst, NB on June 26, 1924, she was a daughter of Nicholas and Josephine (Chenard) Thibodeau. Sister Josephine entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 15, 1944 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1953.
She began her teaching ministry in 1947 at Mount St. Agnes Academy in Bermuda and remained there until 1959. From there she was transferred to New York where she taught until 1963. From 1963 until 1981, she continued her teaching ministry in such places as Eastern Passage, NS; Stellarton, NS; Port Hawkesbury, NS and Enfield, NS. In 1981, she began her secretarial work at Mount Saint Vincent Renewal Centre while also serving as bursar. She was then transferred to the Antigonish Province in 1985 where she served as Provincial Secretary until 1988. From 1988 until 1991, she was involved in pastoral ministries and worked as a hospital volunteer. This time her transfer brought her to Quebec, where she worked as a volunteer in St. Brigid’s Home from 1991 to 1998. Sister Josephine moved to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in 1998 where she remained until 2003 when she was transferred to DePaul Hall at Parkstone Enhanced Care, followed by a move to Caritas Residence in 2008 where she remained until her death in 2016. Sister Josephine is survived by her sister Grace Nicholson, Winnipeg, MB and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Stella Hennessy, and Sister Mary Lea, SC; and by her brothers Richard, Edgar, Leo, and Raymond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:45 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence on Friday, February 19, 2016. Cremation will follow and burial will take place at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
