Sister Mary Stanislaus Hennessy

Hennessy-Mary-Stanislaus-bwHennessy, Sister Mary Stanislaus, 92, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 15, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS, on September 7, 1923, she was a daughter of John and Mary (Manette) Hennessy. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on February 1, 1945 and made her final vows on August 15, 1953. Sister Stanislaus began her ministry as a commercial teacher at St. Ambrose, Yarmouth in 1947. In 1948, she became a primary teacher at St. Mary’s, Halifax and went on to educate the younger children in St. Paul’s, Herring Cove; St. Patrick’s, Halifax; St. Bernard’s, Enfield; St. Mary’s, Halifax; and finally, St. Joseph’s, Halifax, which was to be her final assignment before retiring in 1983.
From 1983 until 1997, Sister Stanislaus offered her services as a volunteer in our congregational health care centre within the Motherhouse and in pastoral ministries. In 1997, she retired from active volunteer service. She continued to carry on her ministry through prayer and assistance to others in and outside of the congregation while living in St. Stephen Parish. In 2013, she moved to Caritas Residence where she remained until her death. Sister Stanislaus is survived by her sisters – Ruth Purcell (Halifax), Marjorie Keddy (New Glasgow) and Eleanor Hennessy (Halifax). She was predeceased by her sister, Minnie, and by her brothers – Harold and John. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Thursday, February 18, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 19 at 9:45 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
