Sister Stella Kennah (Mary Corita)
Kennah, Sister Stella (Mary Corita), 86, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on April 14, 2015. Born in Bathurst, NB on December 25, 1928, she was a daughter of Charles and Loretta (Leger) Kennah. Sister Stella entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on December 8, 1946 and made her final vows on August 15, 1955. She received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1972. Sister spent 37 years in education, ministering in Nova Scotia, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick and Bermuda before retiring in 1986. In 1987 she moved to Bathurst to take care of her mother until her mother’s death in 1989. Sister Stella was no stranger to illness herself, and when she moved to Halifax in 1990, it was thought that she would die within a relatively short time. This did not happen and Sister Stella lived life to the fullest until the age of 86. Sister is survived by her sister Mildred (Stan) Stovin, Lindsay, ON; her sister-in-law Elvera (Doucet) Kennah (Clifford); many nephews and nieces; grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She was pre-deceased by her parents and step-father, Willie Cormier; sisters, Evelyn Pellerin and Bella Hunter; and by her brothers Gerald, Thomas and Clifford. There will be no wake. Cremation has already taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 20th in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. Sister Alice Aucoin (Margaret Elizabeth)
Aucoin, Sister Alice (Margaret Elizabeth), 97, died in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS, on July 8, 2015. Born in Halifax, NS on December 10, 1917, she was a daughter of Hubert and Lucy (Arsenault) Aucoin. Sister Alice entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on February 10, 1958 and made her final vows on August 15, 1966. Sister received special training and was granted a Certified Clerkship in Pharmacy. She took a refresher course in Secretarial Studies at the Henderson School of Commerce in Edmonton, Alberta. From 1960 to 1964 she assisted in Pharmacy and X-Ray as a typist. In 1965 until 1969, she did various ministries which included catechesis. In 1969, she took up residence in St. Vincent Convent, Edmonton, Alberta. From there, she did such ministries as secretarial work in Camsell Hospital where she also worked as a Medical Records Stenographer. She served as secretary in St. Andrew’s Rectory for several years. She enjoyed a sabbatical year in 1983 at Galilee Community, Arnprior, ON. Between 1984 and her retirement in 1992, she continued her secretarial duties in such areas as the Ecumenical Justice Coalition in Edmonton. In 1994 she was transferred to Halifax where she resided at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse until 2003 when she went to DePaul Hall at Parkstone Enhanced Care. She then moved to Caritas Residence in 2008 and returned to Parkstone Enhanced Care in 2010. Sister Alice is survived by her nieces: Johanna Aucoin-Slaunwhite, Halifax; Nancy Lingley, Halifax; Anne-Marie MacLellan, Alberta; and by her grand-niece Megan MacLellan, Halifax. She was predeceased by her sisters: Helen Sawler and Mary Robitaille; and by her brothers: John, Little Joe, Bill, Charles, Wilfred, and Leo. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Sunday, July 12, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 13 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Rosa Jones
Jones, Sister Rosa (Marie Frances), 93, died in the QEII, Infirmary site in Halifax, NS, on October 16, 2015. Born in Edmonton, AB on January 23, 1922, she was a daughter of Samuel and Rosa (Jack) Jones. Sister Rosa entered the Sisters of Cha
rity – Halifax, on July 10, 1943 and made her final vows on August 15, 1952. She received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and later became a Certified Nursing Assistant from the Halifax Infirmary in the province of Nova Scotia in 1968. In 1976, she became a Certified Nursing Aide in the province of Alberta. Her ministry began in 1946 when she taught in Brooklyn, NY until 1953. Her next mission was in Bathurst, NB where she taught from 1953 to 1954. From 1954 to 1967, she continued her teaching mission in such places as Yarmouth, New Waterford, Glace Bay, NS and in Edmonton, AB. In 1968, she completed her studies at the Halifax Infirmary to become a CNA. She then went on to serve as a CNA at the Seton Hospital in Jasper, AB; then Immaculata Hospital, Westlock, AB; and finally in Camsell Hospital, Edmonton, AB. Sister Rosa resigned from nursing in January, 1987. She then became a volunteer in the Palliative Care Unit in Camsell Hospital until 1994. In 1994, she began volunteer work in the Palliative Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, a service she continued until 2008.
In 2013, Sister Rosa moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax, NS where she resided until her death. Sister Rosa is survived by her sister Dorothy Clarke; her sister-in-law, Christine Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Sister was predeceased by her sisters Marvella Woldit, Margaret Simmons and Myrtle Jones and by her brother, John. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, October 21, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 22, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Myra Elizabeth Griffin, SC (Sister Joseph Thomas) of Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, on November 2, 2015. A Sister of Charity for 73 years who was missioned at Brooklyn, NY, Rego Park, NY, Renton, WA, Vancouver, B.C., Point Gray, B.C., Lowell, Lawrence, North Andover and Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills. Beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Clohessy) Griffin. Sister of Claire Francell, Gerald Griffin and the late Joan Stiles. Molloy, Sister Margaret (John Cecilia)
Molloy, Sister Margaret (John Cecilia), 87, died in the QEII Health Centre, Halifax, NS on November 7, 2015. Born in Grand Falls, Nfld. on March 13, 1928, she was the daughter of John and Alicia (Murray) Molloy. Sister Margaret entered the Sisters of Charity- Halifax on September 8, 1949 and made her final vows on August 15, 1958. Her educational background included a BA (1949) and a BLS (1953) from Mount Saint Vincent College; a MA (1966) in History from Boston College as well as a MA (1968) from the University of Windsor. In 1954, she began her teaching career in St. Brigid Home, and then in St. Patrick High School, Quebec City, where she taught and served as librarian until 1967. In that year, she was released from teaching to further her studies at the University of Windsor. As of November 1, 1968, she became Dean of Studies at MSVU and then served as Academic Dean until 1974 when she became a full-time student. She later became a History professor at MSVU until 1980.
Sister Margaret became the Treasurer General of the congregation in 1980 and served in that capacity until 1988. For a year, Sister Margaret was granted permission to care for her parents in Grand Falls, Nfld. In 1989, she was made Administrator of Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, a position she held until 1999. She enjoyed a sabbatical year and then retired in 2000. In that year, she volunteered her services in the congregational Archives until, in 2015, her physical condition prevented her from continuing. Sister Margaret is survived by her brother, Robert, (Grand Falls, Nfld.) and many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, James. We will welcome the body to Caritas Residence on Thursday evening, November 12, with visitation from 6:30 pm followed by a Prayer Service at 7 pm. The wake will resume at 10:30 am on Friday, November 13, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence at 2 pm. Feron, Sister Lucille (Marion David)
Feron, Sister Lucille (Marion David), 88, died in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS, on November 9, 2015. Born in Montreal, QC on November 1, 1927, she was a daughter of Austin and Mona (Ryan) Feron. Sister Lucille entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1945 and made her final vows on August 15, 1954. She earned a BA from Mount Saint Vincent College, Halifax, NS, in 1959 and a M.Ed. in Administration from Boston College, Boston, MA, in 1966. Sister Lucille began her ministry as an educator in 1948 at Resurrection-Ascension School, Rego Park, NY, followed by a short time at Sacred Heart School in Riverton, NJ, then four years at St. Sebastian School in Woodside, NY. She was then missioned to Oxford School in Halifax, NS for three years before moving on to St. Patrick School, also in Halifax, where she served as Principal. These ministry assignments lasted from 1948 until 1968. In 1968, she was appointed Director of Education for the Halifax SC Province and also served as first Assistant on the Congregational Province Collegial Body. From 1969 to 1974 she was a teacher at Bridgewater High School, coordinated a Religious Education Program and volunteered her services with the mentally challenged. The following year she continued to be a coordinator of a Religious Education Program, but this time it was in Lakeside and Hubbards Parishes. In 1975. she served as assistant to the SC Provincial Treasurer, a position she held until 1980; she also volunteered at St. Vincent Guest House. From 1980 to 1982, she became a full-time director of our Outreach Program at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, a ministry she faithfully carried out until the late 1990’s when her health failed her. In 2003, Sister was moved to Parkstone Enhanced Care, then to Caritas Residence for a brief time and then back to Parkstone Enhanced Care where she remained until her death. Sister Lucille is survived by her brother Donald (Bud) (Lynda) Feron, and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Wallace; and by her brothers Gordon and Peter. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Sunday, November 15, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 16 at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Clare Ashe (Wilfred Mary)
Ashe, Sister Clare (Wilfred Mary), 85, died in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, VG site, Halifax, NS on January 15, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS, on September 21, 1930, she was a daughter of William and Margaret (MacAvoy) Ashe. Sister Clare entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1951 and made her final vows on August 15, 1960. Sister Clare received a BSc in Elementary Education in 1966 and a BA in 1968; both degrees were from Mount Saint Vincent University. She began her ministry as an educator in Sillery, QC in 1954 and taught there until 1960. She continued in this same ministry in Bellmore, NY; Vancouver, BC; Jasper, Alta; Edmonton, Alta; and Mississauga, Ont. All of these years of ministry brought her to 1983. In that year, she was granted a sabbatical at the Galilee Community in Arnprior, Ont. From 1984 to 1989, she continued her teaching in Mississauga, Ont. In 1989, she was transferred to Hamilton, Bermuda where she taught until 1995. In that year, she returned to the Halifax Province where she served as the Treasurer of the Vice-Province and later as the Branch Office Treasurer from 1996 until 2001. From 2001 to 2008, Sister Clare volunteered in various capacities. She retired in December, 2008, and moved to Caritas Residence. Sister Clare is survived by her sisters, Catherine O’Malley (Ottawa), and Pauline Fry (Halifax); by her brother, James (Ottawa); along with many devoted and loving nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews numbering 100. Sister was pre-deceased by her sister Helen MacDonald, and by her brothers Robert and Gerald. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, January 20, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 21, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Geraldine Kelly (Ethel Thomas)
Kelly, Sister Geraldine (Ethel Thomas), 89, died in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary site in Halifax, NS, on January 22, 2016. Born in Quebec City, QC on March 28, 1926, she was a daughter of Thomas and Ethel (Burke) Kelly. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1944 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1953. She received a BA with a major in French from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1962 and later earned a M.A.T from St. Michael’s College, Vermont in 1972. Sister Geraldine began her ministry as a teacher at St. Patrick School in Halifax where she remained for a year. She then moved on to St. Stephen School in Halifax and taught Grade 1 and Sunday religion classes from 1948 to 1954. Her next move brought her to Sillery, QC where she spent eight years teaching Grade 1 and also teaching French. In Medford, MA she taught Kindergarten and religion classes from 1962 to 1965. She then travelled to Arvida, QC where she continued her teaching from 1965 to 1973. While in Arvida she also served on the parish council and was a representative on the Diocesan Religion Committee. Her next mission was at Sacred Heart School in Bathurst, NB from 1973 until 1986. Once again, she served on the parish council and was Coordinator of Catechetics for the Diocese of Bathurst. From 1981 to 1986, she was a part of the Pastoral Center in Bathurst. In 1986, she returned to Sillery, QC, where she volunteered at St. Brigid’s Home, became part of the Liturgical Committee for St. Patrick Parish, did some pastoral ministry work, was the local treasurer and the local historian. In 1997, she moved to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse where she remained until some of the sisters were transferred to DePaul Hall in Parkstone. When Caritas Residence was opened, she, along with the other sisters in DePaul Hall, were brought back to this facility. In 2013, she was transferred to Parkstone Enhanced Care where she remained until her death. Sister Geraldine is survived by her sister, Myrtle (Paul) Nadeau and by her brother, Desmond, along with several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Thomas, Paul, and Brian. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Tuesday, January 26, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 27, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
Sister Margaret Harvey (Thomas Maria)
Harvey, Sister Margaret (Thomas Maria), 90, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 11, 2016. Born in Grand Falls, NL on February 25, 1925, she was a daughter of Thomas and Anne (Blackmore) Harvey. Sister Margaret entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on September 8, 1945 and made her final vows on August 15, 1954. Prior to her entrance, she received a BSc in Secretarial Studies and did four summers of stenographic work. Sister Margaret received her BA in 1954 and then went on to receive a MA in Philosophy from St. Louis University in 1964. She also earned accreditation as Animator of PRH (Personality & Human Relations) Sessions after attending training sessions from 1978 to 1980 in Winnipeg, Man. She actually began her ministry as an educator in 1948 and continued through 1961. She then went on to become a Professor of Philosophy at Mount Saint Vincent College from 1964 until 1966. From 1966 until 1969 she served at Mistress of Postulants at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse. In 1969, she became secretary to the Mothers General of the Sisters of Charity – Halifax until 1975. While living at St. Ignatius Convent in Bedford, NS, she held Animating Sessions in PRH from 1976 to 1980. She was elected Secretary General of the Congregation in 1980 and served in that capacity until 1984. She returned to the work of PRH in 1984 and combining that with some Retreat work, she continued these ministries until the late 1990’s. She retired to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in 2006. When the Motherhouse was closed in 2008, she moved with the other Sisters to Caritas Residence. She is survived by her sister Hilary (Joseph) Pacheco, (Bermuda); by her brothers Neil (Lois) and Leo (Madeline); also by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Vera Harvey, Zita Byrd and Eileen Smith; by her brother Kevin. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, February 15, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 16 at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
Sister Mary Josephine Thibodeau
Thibodeau, Sister Mary Josephine, 91, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 13, 2016. Born in Bathurst, NB on June 26, 1924, she was a daughter of Nicholas and Josephine (Chenard) Thibodeau. Sister Josephine entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 15, 1944 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1953.
She began her teaching ministry in 1947 at Mount St. Agnes Academy in Bermuda and remained there until 1959. From there she was transferred to New York where she taught until 1963. From 1963 until 1981, she continued her teaching ministry in such places as Eastern Passage, NS; Stellarton, NS; Port Hawkesbury, NS and Enfield, NS. In 1981, she began her secretarial work at Mount Saint Vincent Renewal Centre while also serving as bursar. She was then transferred to the Antigonish Province in 1985 where she served as Provincial Secretary until 1988. From 1988 until 1991, she was involved in pastoral ministries and worked as a hospital volunteer. This time her transfer brought her to Quebec, where she worked as a volunteer in St. Brigid’s Home from 1991 to 1998. Sister Josephine moved to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in 1998 where she remained until 2003 when she was transferred to DePaul Hall at Parkstone Enhanced Care, followed by a move to Caritas Residence in 2008 where she remained until her death in 2016. Sister Josephine is survived by her sister Grace Nicholson, Winnipeg, MB and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Stella Hennessy, and Sister Mary Lea, SC; and by her brothers Richard, Edgar, Leo, and Raymond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:45 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence on Friday, February 19, 2016. Cremation will follow and burial will take place at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
Sister Mary Stanislaus Hennessy
Hennessy, Sister Mary Stanislaus, 92, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on February 15, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS, on September 7, 1923, she was a daughter of John and Mary (Manette) Hennessy. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on February 1, 1945 and made her final vows on August 15, 1953. Sister Stanislaus began her ministry as a commercial teacher at St. Ambrose, Yarmouth in 1947. In 1948, she became a primary teacher at St. Mary’s, Halifax and went on to educate the younger children in St. Paul’s, Herring Cove; St. Patrick’s, Halifax; St. Bernard’s, Enfield; St. Mary’s, Halifax; and finally, St. Joseph’s, Halifax, which was to be her final assignment before retiring in 1983.
From 1983 until 1997, Sister Stanislaus offered her services as a volunteer in our congregational health care centre within the Motherhouse and in pastoral ministries. In 1997, she retired from active volunteer service. She continued to carry on her ministry through prayer and assistance to others in and outside of the congregation while living in St. Stephen Parish. In 2013, she moved to Caritas Residence where she remained until her death. Sister Stanislaus is survived by her sisters – Ruth Purcell (Halifax), Marjorie Keddy (New Glasgow) and Eleanor Hennessy (Halifax). She was predeceased by her sister, Minnie, and by her brothers – Harold and John. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Thursday, February 18, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the prayer service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 19 at 9:45 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
Sister Carmelita Currie (Michael Marie)
Currie, Sister Carmelita (Michael Marie), 84, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS on March 8, 2016. Born in Reserve, NS on March 21, 1931, she was a daughter of Michael and Mary (Finnell) Currie. Sister Carmelita entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on September 8, 1949 and made her final vows on August 15, 1958. She received a BSEd and a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University. She began her ministry as an educator when she spent a few months teaching in Havre Boucher, NS, in 1952. She then was missioned to Brooklyn, NY where she taught for four years. At the end of that time, she returned to Havre Boucher in 1956 and remained there until 1957, followed by two years of teaching in Lourdes, NS. From 1959 to 1966 she taught in Oxford School, Halifax, NS. Sister Carmelita then moved to Dorval, QC, where she taught elementary school until 1974. In that year, she began teaching high school in Dorval and began her work in caring for foster boys, a work she continued until 1991. She also volunteered as a driver for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Later, she moved to Sillery, QC, where she volunteered in St. Brigid’s Home for several years. In 1998, she returned to Halifax, NS and resided in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse, where she coordinated the transportation needs of the retired sisters, a work she continued until 2015 when her health deteriorated to the point where she could no longer sustain her schedule. Sister Carmelita is survived by her sister Ursula (Michael) Macdonald (Reserve Mines); sisters-in-law, Anna (New Waterford) and Cecilia (Reserve Mines); and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Theresa Amadio and Angie Campbell; by her brothers Rev. Reginald Currie, Michael, Basil and John (Jake). The body will be in Caritas Residence on Thursday, March 10, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm.
