Hayes, Sister Elizabeth (Regina Marie), 87, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS, on March 21, 2016. Born in Halifax, NS on January 11, 1929, she was a daughter of Leonard and Rita (Bates) Hayes. Sister Elizabeth entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax, on September 8, 1947 and made her final vows on August 15, 1956. She received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent College, Halifax, NS, a MS from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana and a Master of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, NS. Sister Elizabeth began her ministry in education as a teacher at St. Agnes School, Halifax, in 1950. In 1959 she was transferred to St. Patrick High School, Halifax, where she remained until 1964. In that year, she moved to Vancouver, BC, where she taught in Notre Dame High School until 1970. From 1970 to 1971, she served on the provincial staff for apostolic research in our Western Province. She then taught high school for a year in Kelowna, BC. In 1972, she was elected by the Twelfth General Chapter to serve as Canadian Assistant for a period of four years. In 1976, she was elected by the Thirteenth General Chapter to serve as Second Assistant on the General Council. From 1980 to 1982, Sister Elizabeth served in parish ministry in St. John Vianney Parish, Lower Sackville, NS. At the end of that ministry, she was elected to serve as Provincial Superior of the Western Province. While serving in this office, she became President of the CRC-W from 1988 to 1990. Sister Elizabeth became a student at St. Paul’s in Ottawa where she received a Bachelor of Canon Law and then went on to serve as a Marriage Tribunal Judge in the Diocese of Nelson, BC from 1993 until 1994. She was transferred to Cape Breton where she served as a Marriage Tribunal Judge for the Diocese of Antigonish for two years and then served in a similar capacity for the Diocese of Halifax from 1996 until her retirement in 2005. Sister Elizabeth is survived by her sister, Marie Whelan (St. John’s, NL); by her brother, Archbishop Emeritus James Hayes, D.D., Halifax; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Rev. John Hayes. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, March 28 with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 29, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Catherine Hanlon, SC, of Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, on April 25, 2016. S. Eva O’Connor (Joseph Francis)
O’Connor, Sister Eva (Joseph Francis), 100, died in Caritas Residence, Halifax, NS, on July 2, 2016. Born in Lowell, NB on June 9, 1916, she was a daughter of Herbert and Mary Emily (Melanson) O’Connor. Sister Eva entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on January 31, 1935 and made her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1943. At the outset of her ministry in education, she received a BSc in Home Economics which served as the basis of her teaching career. She served in many areas in the Maritimes including Prospect, Terence Bay, Reserve, and New Waterford, all in Nova Scotia. This time of service lasted from 1940 until 1956. A short period of illness interrupted her ministry, but in 1957, she resumed her teaching, this time in Micmac and Amherst, NS; Vancouver and Kelowna, BC, until 1977.
After that time period, Sister Eva ministered in parishes, visited the elderly, especially at St. Brigid’s Home in Quebec, and served as school librarian in Cranbrook, BC. Her ministry also took her to Edmonton, AB, Bathhurst, NB and Sillery, QC. Retirement from active ministry came in 1998 but she continued her ministry as a volunteer. In 2008, Sister Eva moved to Caritas Residence, Halifax, where she remained until her death. She is survived by her sister, Lillian Green, Sussex, NB; by her nephews John (Nancy) Hopper, Halifax, NS, Sheldon (Geri) Hopper, Hillsborough, NB, Ron (Janice) MacDow, Berwick, NS, Clayton (Marquita) McKinley, Edmonton, AB and Bert (Myrna) McEachern, Moncton, NB; by her nieces Beverly (Alister) McGillivary, Cape Breton, Beverly (Jim) Green, Tofino, BC, Sharon (Hans) Derouaux, Bathurst, NB; and by her grandnieces and grandnephews, Jason, Kate, Julie and Mark Hopper. Sister Louise Bray (Mildred James)
Bray, Sister Louise (Mildred James), 84, died at Caritas Residence, 215 Seton Road, Halifax, NS on July 28, 2016. Born in Boston, MA, on May 22, 1932, she was the daughter of James and Lucy (McGrath) Bray. Sister Louise entered the Sisters of Charity ̶ Halifax on September 8, 1950 and made her final vows on August 15, 1959. Sister Louise received a B.A. (1966) from Mount Saint Vincent, Halifax, NS; a M.SW. (1971) from Carlton University, Ottawa, ON; and a Doctor of Human Letters (1994) from St. Francis University, Antigonish, NS. She began her ministry as a teacher in New Waterford, NS in 1953 followed by teaching in Dorval, QC in 1963. Following two years there, Sister Louise taught at Saint Anthony School, Glace Bay. While in Glace Bay she completed the degree in social work and continued in that ministry in the Glace Bay area. During this time, Sister Louise was instrumental in establishing Seton Foundation which provides affordable housing for families with low incomes. The foundation celebrated its fortieth anniversary last year. In 1982, Sister Louise became the provincial superior of the Antigonish Province of the Sisters of Charity. In 1988, she was elected General Superior and served in that role for two consecutive terms. When Sister Louise’s terms were completed, she moved to Ontario where she ministered at Southdown in Aurora, ON as Director of Aftercare until she moved to Halifax in 2006 where she volunteered in various capacities. In 2015, Sister Louise retired to Caritas Residence. Sister Louise is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol Bray (Massachusetts) and many devoted and loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and three brothers, William, Stephen and James and one sister, Norma. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, August 1, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 2, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Anna D’Entremont (Mary Virginia)
D’Entremont, Sister Anna (Mary Virginia), 94, died in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site, Halifax, NS, on August 26, 2016. Born in Meteghan River, NS on January 14, 1922, she was a daughter of Leonard and Sarah (LeBlanc) d’Entremont. Sister Anna entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax February 2, 1941 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1949. She received a BA in 1960 from Mount Saint Vincent College and a B. Pedagogie in 1965 from the College de Bathurst. Sister began her ministry in education in Dorchester, MA from 1943 to 1944. Her next assignment was teaching in Pubnico, NS from 1944 to 1947, followed by a move to Church Point, NS where she taught from 1947 to 1956. She then went on to teach in Meteghan, NS from 1956 to 1958 and then in Bathurst, NB from 1958 to 1963. In 1963, Sister Anna was sent to Wedgeport, NS where she taught school, became the local superior, was appointed to the Provincial Collegial Body, and was made principal in 1971. In 1974 she became assistant guidance counsellor in St. Anne du Ruisseau High School, a position she held until 1979. In that year, she retired from teaching and became involved in the Yarmouth Diocesan Marriage Tribunal and served in other pastoral ministries until 1988. She was then transferred to Halifax, NS and lived at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse and was involved is various internal ministries there until 2008. In that year, she and all the sisters moved to Caritas Residence where she remained until a week before her death. Sister Anna is survived by her sister, Celeste Deveau (Metaghan, NS) and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Rosaline Boudreau. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Monday, August 29 with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 30, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Regina Mary McLean
McLean, Sister Regina Mary, 86, died in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Infirmary Site, Halifax, NS on August 27, 2016. Born in Dominion, Cape Breton, NS on April 2, 1930, she was a daughter of
Leo and Amy (Daly) McLean. Sister Regina entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on October 1, 1955 and made her perpetual profession
on August 15, 1964. Prior to entering the congregation, Sister Regina had earned a BA from Mount Saint Vincent College. After profession, she received a B.Ed. and an M.A. in English from the same institute.
Sister’s ministry in education began in 1958 when she was sent to St. Patrick School in Quebec City, QC as a substitute teacher for three months. She returned to Halifax, NS and taught in the primary grades of St. Patrick School from 1958 to 1963. She was then missioned to Vancouver, BC where she taught students in Grades 9 through 12 at Notre Dame High School and served as Librarian until 1965. After a year teaching in New Waterford, she returned to Halifax and began teaching in St. Patrick High School and remained there until 1981.
From 1982 until 1987 she became a Resource Teacher at Titus Smith School. Sister Regina was then transferred to the Boston Province where she taught at Monsignor Ryan High School from 1987 to 1991. The following year was her sabbatical year. In 1992, Sister Regina began as a volunteer at House of Hope in Glace Bay, which is a centre for recovering alcoholic women, a work she engaged in until 2000.
In that year, she retired from active ministry, and returned to Halifax. Eventually she moved to Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse where she resided until 2008 when all the sisters moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax. Sister Regina is survived by several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters – Alice Gillis, Jean MacIntyre, Bette MacDonald; and by her brothers – Clarence, Harry, and Wilfred. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, August 31 with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 1, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Mary (Angeline) MacIntyre (Anne Daniel)
MacIntyre, Sister Mary Angeline (Anne Daniel), 93, died in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, NS on September 9, 2016. Born in Boularderie West, NS, on August 1, 1923, she was a daughter of John D. and Anastasia (Jessome) MacIntyre. Sister Mary entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on February 2, 1949 and made her perpetual profession on August 15, 1957. Sister spent most of her life doing internal ministries such as housekeeping, portress, and cafeteria duties. Sister’s ministries took her to Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax; Seton Hall, Patchogue, NY; Halifax Infirmary, Halifax; St. Paul Convent, Dartmouth, NS and St. Andrew Convent, Eastern Passage, NS. In several of these places she was also engaged in Catechetics, visiting shut-ins, palliative care visitor and nursing aide in Ocean View Manor. Sister retired from active duty in 1996 and took up residence in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse in Halifax until she moved to Parkstone Enhanced Care in 2002. She was among the first group of sisters to move to this facility and is the last member of the original group. Sister Mary is survived by a number of cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Annie Ethier, and her foster-sister Margaret Wilkie; by her brothers Angus, Francis, Daniel and John. The body will lie in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, September 14 with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 15, at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Mary Fabian Matthews
S. M. Annata Brockman
Brockman, Sister M. Annata, 89, died on October 25, 2016, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary site, in Halifax, NS. Born near Middle Lake, Saskatchewan, on September 7, 1927, she was a daughter of Paul and Louise (Ludwig) Brockman. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on August 6, 1946 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1955. Sister Annata received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, NS; an MEd in Educational Administration from the University of Alberta; a BTh as well as an MTh from Newman Theological College in Alberta. Sister began her ministry as an educator in Halifax, NS as a teacher from 1949 to 1951. From that date on, Sister served in North Sydney, NS, Kelowna, BC, Cranbrook, BC, Edmonton, AB, Burnaby, BC and back to Edmonton, AB; in all of these places Sister served as teacher or principal or both until 1981. In that year, she became a Pastoral Assistant at St. Joseph’s Cathedral. She remained in this ministry for the next 24 years until her retirement in 2005. The next five years found her doing volunteer work as a pastoral minister to the sick and dying. In 2010, she became a volunteer teacher at the school named in her honour – the Sister Annata Brockman Elementary/Junior High School – where she remained until 2016. She loved interacting with the children at the school. After her long stay in Alberta, Sister Annata moved to Halifax, NS and became a resident of Caritas Residence, a retirement facility of the Sisters of Charity-Halifax. On November 14, 2016, Sister Annata was to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from St. Stephen College at the University of Alberta. It will now be given posthumously. Sister Annata is survived by her sisters – Josephine Holterman, Quinton, SK; Mary Welder, Kelowna, BC; Martha Lansdowne, Kelowna, BC; and by her brother – Ralph, Quinton, SK. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and over 130 great-nieces and great-nephews. She was pre-deceased by her sisters – Lena Dosdall and Gertrude Grybowski; and by her brothers – George, Herman, Leo, Tony, and Bernard. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Tuesday, November 1, with visitation from 3 pm until the Prayer Service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 2 at 10 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. S. Marjory Gallagher (John Evelyn)
Gallagher, Sister Marjory (Sister John Evelyn), 77, died at the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa Motherhouse, November 25, 2016. Born in L’Avenir, Quebec, on November 25, 1939, she was a daughter of James W. and Evelyn (Goggin) Gallagher. Marjory entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 12, 1964 and made her perpetual profession on November 1, 1970.
Marjory taught many students French in Sherbrook, Quebec and in Halifax, Hebbville and Amherst (all in Nova Scotia). Later she was an Assistant to the General Secretary of the Canadian Religious Conference-National.
In 1995 Marjory earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Canon Law) Degree and continued her work with religious. She taught at Saint Paul’s University, Ottawa. When Marjory completed a six-year term in Congregational Leadership, she said she was retired and free-lancing. She continued her ministry with and for many religious communities spending much time in her Canon Lawyer role until September. She loved to read and write as well as meeting new people and spending time with family and other friends.
During the last month of her illness Marjory was happy living with the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa for which her community is grateful. She is survived by her sister Annie (Gallagher) Parenteau and loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her sister Mary (Gallagher) Young and her brother Redmond Gallagher.
There will be visitation at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa Motherhouse, rue Bruyere, Ottawa.

Sister Magdalen Oliver (Francis Stephen)
Oliver, Sister Magdalen (Francis Stephen), 84, died on December 18, 2016 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary site, in Halifax, NS. Born in Reserve Mines on November 24, 1932, she was a daughter of John and Frances (Delaney) Oliver. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1951 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1960. Sister Magdalen received a B.Sc. in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1967, and in 1993 she was certified as a Nurse’s Aide. Sister began her ministry as a housekeeper at Seton Hall in Truro, NS in 1954 and remained there until 1962. In that year, she was sent to Brooklyn, NY where she taught until 1968. She then spent one year at Seton Academy in Vancouver, BC, followed by a teaching assignment in Riverton, NJ, then in Brooklyn, NY until 2002. In that year, she began work as a Nurse’s Aide until 2005 when she also was involved in Home Care until 2006. In that year, Sister Magdalen retired from active ministry. She resided in Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse for one year, then moved to St. Frances Cabrini Residence in Brooklyn, NY where she remained until 2009. In 2009, she moved to Caritas Residence in Halifax, NS and stayed until her death in 2016. Sister Magdalen is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters – Charlotte Metcalfe, Elizabeth Kottick Flake, Nellie McEachern, Mary King, and Rita Hayes; by her brothers – Daniel, William, Leo, Joseph, John, Bartholomew, and Cecil. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Tuesday, December 20, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 21 at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. S. Elizabeth Trainor (Elizabeth of the Child of Jesus)
Trainor, Sister Elizabeth (Elizabeth of the Child Jesus), 88, died on December 22, 2016 in Parkstone Enchanced Care in Halifax, NS. Born in Kinkora, PEI on September 20, 1928, she was a daughter of Joseph and Helen Agatha (McKenna) Trainor. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1951 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1960. Sister Elizabeth received a BA from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1972. She began her ministry in education in Dorchester, MA in 1954 and remained there until 1962 when she was assigned to Enfield until 1966. In that year, she was missioned to Dartmouth, NS where she taught until 1969. She then became the Catechetical Coordinator in St. Michael’s Parish where she served in that capacity until 1978. Sister then began working at Saint Vincent Guest House as an assistant in Activity Programs. Later, she spent some time taking care of her father until his death in 1992. While living in Lower Sackville, NS, she engaged in some volunteer ministry at the Correctional Centre there. At her retirement in 2001, she resided at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse until she moved to DePaul Hall in Parkstone in 2005. When Caritas Residence was opened, all the Sisters from DePaul Hall moved to that facility. Later, She again moved to Parkstone Enhanced Care where she lived until her recent death. Sister Elizabeth is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters: Sister Teresa Trainor, CSM, Anna Hachey, Una Flood, Mary Creamer, and Bernadette Trainor; by her brothers: George, Wilfred, Rev. Emmett, S.J., Rev. Lorne, S.J., Rev John, S.J., and Louis. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, December 28, with visitation from 3:00 p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Sister Theresa McCarthy
McCarthy, Sister Theresa (Dennis Therese), 86, died on January 8, 2017 in Northwood Care, Halifax, NS. Born in Halifax, NS on July 20, 1930, she was a daughter of Dennis and Edith (Hammonds) McCarthy. She entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1949 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1958. Sister Theresa received a BA in 1961 and a BEd in 1962, both from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Later, she began working toward a Diploma in Health Care Services at St. Paul University in Ottawa. She also participated in a residency program in Pastoral Care at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Sister began her ministry in education at St. Sebastian School in Woodside, NY in 1952 and remained there until 1958. In that year, she was transferred to Cape Breton where she taught in New Waterford and No. Sydney until 1969. At that time, she began working in the Business Office at Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse and served there until 1976. While working at the Motherhouse during those years, she also took care of her sister who was also residing at that facility. During 1976, she became a full-time student at the Atlantic School of Theology. She engaged in Hospital Chaplaincy at the Victoria General Hospital from 1978 to 1983. At that time, she was transferred to the Central Province of the Congregation and was missioned to Churchill Falls, NL, where she served in parish ministry until 1985. That year, Sister Theresa returned to Halifax and was engaged in various volunteer services, such as volunteer Court Worker; Ecumenical Chaplain at Northwood Manor; as well as some office work at the Motherhouse. Her last services as a volunteer were at Northwood in Halifax, where she gave her attention to the needs of the persons residing there. Perhaps it is fitting that she spent the last weeks of her life in that facility where she had devoted so much of her time. Sister finally retired in 2000 but kept up her volunteer work until 2008. In that year, she moved to Caritas Residence where she remained until failing health necessitated her move to Northwood Care. Sister is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters – Shelagh Laybolt, Frances Edwards, Clare McCarthy, Helen Bernasconi, Elizabeth Gouthro, Catherine MacDonald, Mary Clarke, and Josephine Kimble; by her brothers – Dennis and Thomas. The body will be in Caritas Residence on Wednesday, January 11, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the Prayer Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 12, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund.
Sister Mary Cavanagh (Mary Austin)
Sister Mary Cavanagh, SC, (Sister Mary Austin) of Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, on January 12, 2017. A Sister of Charity for 66 years who was missioned in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bermuda, locally at Mount Saint Vincent, Wellesley. Beloved daughter of the late Simon and Margaret (McQuaid) Cavanagh. Sister of Emmett Cavanagh, Anna Murphy and Margaret McAdam and the late Leo, Austin and Patrick McQuaid. Visiting hours at Mt. St. Vincent, 125 Oakland St. Wellesley Hills on Tuesday January 17 from 9:30 – 10:15 am with a prayer service at 10:15 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:45 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Sister Eileen Schulenburg
Eileen entered the Sisters of Charity – Halifax on September 8, 1960 and made her perpetual vows on August 15, 1968. Sister Eileen received a B.SC in Elementary Education in 1965 from Mt St. Vincent University and a MSC, Ed. from Brooklyn College in 1974. She began her teaching ministry in Brooklyn and later was asked to do formation work for the NY Province and then did Pastoral work on Long Island. After receiving a Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies (Counseling) at Loyola University in Chicago, Eileen worked in a parish in Tennessee and it was there that she co-founded a safe house for victims of domestic violence. In 1990 she returned to New York, and began her ministry with women, first in a shelter for abused women and then as a chaplain at the women’s jail on Rikers Island. Eileen received training in spiritual direction and for the past ten years has used these gifts to guide many people. Two years ago she began working with the Christian Life Community, an association of lay Christians who adopt an Ignatian model of spiritual life.
Eileen is survived by her brother Rob and her cousins Diane and Jean and their families who were so much a part of her life.
Sister Mary McGowan (Christopher Marie)
Sister Mary McGowan, SC (Sister Christopher Marie) of Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, on January 27, 2017. A Sister of Charity for 64 years who was missioned in Williston Park, Patchogue, Brooklyn, Jamaica and Hollis New York, Riverton New Jersey and Hyattsville Maryland. Locally, Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley. Beloved daughter of the late Christopher and Mae F. (Gordon) McGowan. Sister of Gerard McGowan. Also survived by her sisters in community.
